Is any one among you sick? Let him bring the priests of the Church and let them pray over him, anointing him with oil in the name of the Lord. And the prayer of faith will save the sick man and the Lord will rise him up and if he sins, they shall be forgiven him.
- Letter of James 5: 14-15

The Catechism of the Catholic Church’s section on the Anointing of the Sick defines the purpose of the sacrament as “the conferral of a special grace on the Christian experiencing the difficulties inherent in the condition of grave illness or old age.” (Catechism, 1527)

Communal Anointing of the Sick, a communal celebration of the Anointing of the Sick, is held during Mass and is offered in the Spring and Fall. Please consult the parish bulletin for scheduled dates.

But any time an individual is in need of receiving the Sacrament, one need only call the parish to make a request.

To plan a Funeral or Memorial Mass, text or call 314-881-8475. Or, contact Fr. Tim McMahon at 314-977-7310 or frtim@sfxstl.org.

Prayer for the Sick

Loving God,
Your Son accepted our sufferings to teach us the virtue of patience in human illness.
Hear the prayers we offer for our sick brother/sister.
May all who suffer pain, illness or disease realize that they have been chosen to be saints and know that they are joined to Christ in his suffering for the salvation of the world.  We ask this through Christ our Lord.  Amen.  (Pastoral Care of the Sick, 1983)

Prayer for Commendation of the Dying

Go forth, Christian soul, from this world in the name of God the almighty Father, who created you,
In the name of Jesus Christ, Son of the living God, who suffered for you,
In the name of the Holy Spirit who was poured out upon you,
Go forth, faithful Christian.
May you live in peace this day, with Mary, the virgin Mother of God, with Joseph, and all the angels and saints. (Pastoral Care of the Sick, 1983)
